Sargassum - seaweed

Coastal dwellers at Jomoro in the Western Region of Ghana has complained bitterly how sargassum has taken over the the coast and shores from Beyin to Newtown border and affected their businesses especially fishing and Beach operation.

Sargassum is seaweed known to be originated from the North Atlantic Ocean, Sargasso sea. The problem is as a result of the abnormal surface heat of the sea through climate change.

It was first discovered by Portuguese sailors who sailed in the North Atlantic Ocean some years ago. The issue has now become a global phenomenon the world is battling with.

According to the fishermen in Jomoro, they said they cannot go to fishing and when they go to fishing they do not get catch. The net only catches the seaweed instead of fish because of its plenty in the sea.

On behalf of the Beach operators, they also said it has affected their business operations, "People are longer patronising the beach business such as swimming and enjoying on the shore because of the sargassum odour", they told IG-TECH MEDIA News Team.

As another man's meat is another man's posion, Sargassum, seaweed is beneficial for pelagic species such as tuna, jackfish and turtles. They feed on the weed and inhabitant.

Other people also has it that the seaweed has some economic and scientific benefits as it can be used for fertilizer and biofill, fossil fuel.

But both fishermen and Beach operators at Jomoro are calling on government and NGOs to come to their aid and relief them from the devastating issue on the coast and the shores.
