There is no sign in sight of an end to the long queues being experienced at the various National Identification Authority (NIA) centers by Ghanaians for the Ghana card registration and collection.
This is because everybody is in a rush to get their Ghana card in order not to beat the deadline of March 31, 2022 for the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) re-registration exercise across the country which requires the use of the Ghana Card.
At Amamorley in the Ga North Municipality the IG-TECH MEDIA NETWORK had visited to find out whether the daily long queues had eased, it turned out that the story still remained the same as the queues had even become longer.
It was also observed that there was no provision for shelter or chairs for the people to comfortably sit and wait for their card to be registered as they stood in the scorching sun.
In queue were the aged, youth and childrenwho were attended to according to numbers allocated to them, as they stood at the entrance of the offices gatewaiting for their names to be mentioned.
In an interview with some residents who were in the queue to have their Ghana card registered and collected raised concerns about the process while others were of the fear that if care was not taken, they would miss the deadline set by the telecom companies.
Mr Adama Fuseni a chef in the area, said countless times have he rushed to the office for his Ghana card but have still not received it.
“So many times, I have been here but I dont get my card, moreover, in the municipality there is only one center which everyone comes there to do the card.”
He added that, Ga North is a new municipality and the people are many, we need more centers in the districtsso that it can reduce the numbers and work load on the officers so that everyone can get their card quickly.
Madam Dorcas Nortey, a trader said, the authority should reconsider the date and extend it to the end of the year so that many people can get the opportunity to register.
"If we are not able to register for the card and government closes registration, it will affect us. Not everybody can get the money and pay the ghc100, ghc150 and ghc300, this is the opportunity for the poor so government should extend the time so that we can re-register our SIM cards", she said.
Emmanuel Lawson, a student said, the Ghana card distorted his schooling because he has to visit the center for his card but would not get to his turn before going back to school.
“We are therefore pleading on government to extend the date further and open more centers in the municipality to make the Ghana card registration easy.”
