5 people suffocate in Afram River

Five people on board a boat crossing the Afram River to their farms have suffocated at Azietsikorpe in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District.

A rescue team on search for the sixth person is currently ongoing.

According to Johnson Anglesinya, the Assembly member for the Gyata Electoral Area who confirmed the incident to 3news.com, added that six other individuals have been successfully rescued.

The victims were part of a group of 12 hired to work on a farm across the Afram River.

Last Wednesday evening, the farmers without life jackets, went on board on a boat with the believe that they will get to their destination on Thursday, November 9. Accidentally, they got drown in the river.

While water levels have receded, the volumes in the Afram River remain high, posing a risk to boats, especially without proper safety measures. Rescue efforts are being coordinated by officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and residents near Afram Lake.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kwahu Afram Plains South, Evans Ntiri–Kyei, stated that he is awaiting an official briefing from the rescue team.
