The Municipal Assembly and the Ga North Department of Transportation have said to improve the welfare of individual drivers and transport unions in the municipality.

The need was raised during a stakeholder consultative meeting with 73 transport unions and individual drivers at Ofankor Church of Pentecost Tuesday November 14, 2023 in Accra.

The engagement in a forum discussed “The Draft Municipal Transport Policy for the Ga North Municipality” that seeks to reform and strengthen the existing transport operators unions and bring on board nonregistered member to join the scheme.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive, Honourable, Simons Sekyim, the reforms will benefit to individual drivers who have registered under unions in the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive outlined the plans by the Assembly when he said, “the Assembly would ensure all registered drivers belonging to unions are registered under the Social Security National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) informal sector contribution”.

“The Assembly would ensure that unions organises training or refresher courses for their drivers”, he added.

The MCE further said that there would be periodic medical screening for commercial drivers and an annual celebration of transport statutory day in an appreciation of commercial drivers’ effort in the development of the municipality.

“The Assembly recognizes your efforts in the development of the transport sector and is determined to improve your operations.”
