The Municipal Assembly and the Ga North Department of Transportation
have said to improve the welfare of individual drivers and transport unions in
the municipality.
The need was raised during a stakeholder consultative
meeting with 73 transport unions and individual drivers at Ofankor Church of
Pentecost Tuesday November 14, 2023 in Accra.
The engagement in a forum discussed “The Draft Municipal Transport Policy for the
Ga North Municipality” that seeks to reform and strengthen the existing
transport operators unions and bring on board nonregistered member to join the
scheme.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive, Honourable,
Simons Sekyim, the reforms will benefit to individual drivers who have
registered under unions in the municipality.
The Municipal Chief Executive outlined the plans by
the Assembly when he said, “the Assembly would ensure all registered drivers
belonging to unions are registered under the Social Security National Insurance
Trust (SSNIT) informal sector contribution”.
“The Assembly would ensure that unions organises
training or refresher courses for their drivers”, he added.
The MCE further said that there would be periodic
medical screening for commercial drivers and an annual celebration of transport
statutory day in an appreciation of commercial drivers’ effort in the
development of the municipality.
“The Assembly recognizes your efforts in the
development of the transport sector and is determined to improve your operations.”
“We will celebrate the World Drivers’ Day every 24th
October and 28th October as Public Transport Day annually with you”,
he said.
“In addition, there is an award scheme to deserving
union who pay their rates such as renewals, stickers, lorry parks tickets and
ground rent to the Assembly as required”, Honourable Sekyim added.
The Head of Urban Transport Department, Mrs Gladys

“Most of the drivers we have on our roads are unexperienced,
they learnt the work as mates from the stations and working on the experience
from their old masters. The current innovations and others in the transport
sector they are not privileged to them”, she said.
“We therefore encourage the unions to send their
drivers to a refresher course at least once in a year and if the union has so
many members they can divide them into three and go per quarter with their
guidance and improve upon their skills”, Mrs Antwi added.
The head of department moreover advised individual drivers
to join unions so that they can benefit from government policies and for easy
identification by respective Assemblies.
Among those present at
the engagement were the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Simons Sekyim, the
Municipal Coordinating Director Madam Osaadu Emelia Heads of Department,
Security Personnel, Chief and Assembly member of Tantra as well as Transport
Unions.
