VRA ends Akosombo Dam water spillage

The Volta River Authority has brought an end to the Akosombo Dam water spillage that have affected and displaced many people and their communities. The statement was a release issued by the Corporate Affairs and External Relations Unit of VRA, October 30, 2023 in Accra.
According to the statement, VRA is committed to continuing its relief and rehabilitation efforts until lives and livelihoods are restored.
They also commended various government agencies and stakeholders for their support to the impacted communities.
The Akosombo Dam water spillage started by the Volta River Authority (VRA), September 15, 2023. The measure was taken to safeguard the dam from potential hovering. The increased water flow in the Volta River has unfortunately led to flooding in low-lying areas along its course, impacting communities such as Mepe, Battor, Sogakope Mafi, Adidome, Ada, and others.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Ghana indicated that more than 26,000 individuals have been displaced by the flood. This has resulted in the loss of homes, possessions, and livelihoods. Additionally, the floods have left a trail of damage, affecting vital infrastructure like roads, bridges, and schools.
