Ga North Municipality mark 39th National Farmers' Day

The Ga North Municipal Assembly has held the 39th National Farmer’s Day at Asofa Community Park in the Ga North Municipality.

The event that happened Friday December 1st, 2023 was dubbed “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience”.

The theme is a support of the United Nations Sustainable Goals 2, which seeks to achieve food security and improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture whilst the goal 13, also states the call for urgent action to tackle climate change and its effects. 

The Paris Agreement is to limit global temperature rise to well below two degrees Celsius.

It is also anticipated that by 2030, there will be enough food for everyone everywhere and climate change cases will be reduced to the minimum for global safety. 

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Simons Sekyim, who superintended the ceremony commended the farmers in his address. 

Hon. Sekyim thanked the farmers for their hard work done and supporting the municipality expand its economic parameters. He said agriculture is the way to go, to feed the people.

MCE delivers speech

The Chief Executive again highlighted key government initiatives in the performance of the Planting for Food and Jobs and said,

"The government has so far made excellent strides in the agricultural sector with Planting for Food and Jobs, Rearing for Food and Jobs, and Planting for Export Development".

The MCE also entreated the farmers to help government in the ways of fighting climate change and the zero hunger in the country.  

“Agriculture is the way to go. As a nation, I opined that people should not always use all the compound of their homes for pavement, reserve and create places for gardens and farms”, the MCE said.

Hon. Sekyim further indicated that, “there is no special people designated for farming. Everyone can farm”.

The Hon. MCE acknowledged himself as a farmer. He added that, farming is an important business and people should support farming initiatives if the Sustainable Goals 2 and 13 to be achieved.

“End, and ensure access to food by all, especially those in the vulnerable group”, the MCE said.

Hon. Sekyim hit the plans of the Assembly for next year.

He indicated that, “Next year, the Municipal Assembly through the Department of Agriculture is going to create more opportunities particularly with the introduction of Planting for Food and Jobs phase two. It will focus on the entire agricultural value chain to reduce over reliance on food importation”,

The Hon. Chief Executive encouraged the youth to get involve in agriculture. He said the area is “Robust” and the Assembly is ready to support anyone or the youth with funds to indulge in agriculture.

The Municipal Director of Agric, Mrs Gifty Pamela Bobuafor also applauded the farmers of their significant role in the contribution to agriculture and food production.

“As we commemorate the 39th National Farmers’ Day and the 5th in the Municipality with you, The Department of Agriculture and the Ministry for Food and Agriculture are happy for this occasion and will continue to work with you for the development of the agric sector”, she said.

“It is our goal to work with you to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2, that acts in the development of sustainable solutions and eradicate hunger by 2030.”

The Director extended her appreciation to the efforts of the Assembly in the execution of the event. She pleaded with the Assembly to provide more support in the areas of fund for the department to achieve the programmes in the pipeline.

“It is my expectation, there will be greater cooperation going forward with you the farmers and the Assembly to work hand in hand and push the agenda of, Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) phase 2," she said.

Nine Farmers in the Municipality received different awards during the ceremony. Among them is Mr Justice Akpalu from Pokuse. He won the Overall Best Farmer. He received a double deck freezer, spraying machine, wheel barrow, wellington boots and cutlasses.

Mr Akpalu said the award is a motivation and he is determined to maintain his position next year by working extra harder.

Mr Alhassan Abubakar from Ayawaso, won the Best Physically Challenged Farmer. He also had a mini refrigerator, wheel barrow, spraying machine among others. He grows Ademeh, okro, cabbage, maize and green pepper.

He advised his colleagues in the streets and traffic areas begging to emulate his footsteps and he is ready to help anyone who will ask him for help.

Other awardees included the Best Woman Farmer, Christine Atukuma from Mayera, Best Agric Staff, Nana Osei Bonsu, Pokuase, Best Crop Farmer Solomon Abroni, Owulaman, Best Acqua-culture Farmer, Elevo Gardens, Amormorley, Best Home Gardener, Bernice Otoo, Amanfro, Best livestock Farmer, Atiku Iddrisu, Abensu, and Best Poultry Farmer, Knest Farms, Abensu.

At the durbar was the Municipal Coordinating Director,Mad. Emelia Osaadu, Presiding Member,  Hon.  Kwaku Duah, Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Heads of Department security personnel, Assembly Members, Staffs, staff of Agric, Farmers and the media to grace the event.
