The Ga North Municipal Transportation Department in collaboration with the Ghana Road Safety Authority Wednesday January 24, 2024 held a training programme at Ofankor Pentecost Church for commercial drivers in the municipality.

The training was dubbed “Stop, Think and Drive”, is a road safety campaign which is a defensive driving training for commercial drivers. It is to build, reduce and improve road users behaviours and risk of involvement in road crashes.

The Planning Manager in charge of Road Safety Training, Mr Felix Owusu underlined some common mistakes caused by drivers on the road.

He said most of the causes of road accidents are human errors, mechanical failures, bad roads and weather conditions.

 According to Mr Felix, “about 99.9% of road accidents are caused by human errors”. 

He said some of these human errors include phone distractions, overspeeding which affects situations beyond driver’s control.

“Drink driving, depression and anger road rage can temper one’s judgement”, he added.     

Again he said, “January to December last year they recorded about 2,276 of death due to road accidents”.

Mr Felix Owusu also highlighted on measures driver must consider when driving on the road.

He said drivers should check car tyres, brakes, oil, lights and wind screen wipers before moving to work.

Mr Felix once again advised drivers and the general public to be observant to road safety signs when using the road. He added that not only must drivers be educated about road accidents but pedestrians must as well gain knowledge about the dos and don’ts while using the road.

“Pedestrians should get right instinct of mind, avoid the use of mobile phone, use pedestrian walk way, use foot bridges and wear brightening colored dresses at night”, he said.

The Municipal Chief Executive outlined plans by the Assembly. He said, “the Assembly will ensure that all registered drivers belonging to unions are registered under the Social Security and National  Insurance Trust (SSNIT)”.

Again he added that there will be periodic medical screening for commercial drivers and an annual celebration of transport statutory day in appreciation of their work as efforts in the development of the municipality.  

“The Assembly will recognise the efforts of the drivers in the municipality. Their efforts have supported in the development of the transport sector and we back and improve their operations”. 

“Likewise, we will celebrate the World Drivers’ Day every 24th October and 28th October as a Public Transport Day annually”, he said.

The Hon. MCE in addition, added that there will be award scheme every year to deserving unions who have contributed well in payment of their rates such as renewals, stickers, lorry parks tickets among others.

After the training, there was certificate presentation to the drivers.

In attendance was 52 drivers and 26 operator unions. The MCE, Hon. Simons Sekyim was present, Superintendent Mr Cliff Arye Offei, Mile 7 Police Commander and Ga North Assistant Director in charge of Commercial Transport Operation, Mrs Gladys Antwi.
